Our F'n Tsunami?
August 30, 2005 - (jjhalliday)
Rarely does anything piss me off when I read the newspaper, but I keep seeing this quote from the mayor of Biloxi in stories about Hurricane Katrina.
"This is our tsunami," Mayor A. J. Holloway of Biloxi, Miss., told The Biloxi Sun Herald.
I understand that, relatively speaking, the disaster that has unfolded to our east is nothing short of catastrophic. I read where 30 people died in one apartment complex alone when it was ripped to shreds by the violent weather.
But...and this is a really big butt....do we need to compare it to something that took HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of lives?
Maybe the numbers work out when the populations of both regions are worked out and factored. But there is a major difference between what happened in Biloxi and what happened in the VAST area affected by the tsunami.
Will the death toll eventually reach 500, 750, 1000? Possibly. But in no way are the two events "equally" related and should never be compared. Sure water killed people and that is where the similarities stop. The people in Asia did not have ANY warning. The people that were killed in LA, MS and AL were given much notice. Unfortunately, not everyone had the means to get out.
Maybe I am not being sensitive. Maybe I am an ass. But that, my friends, is my opinion. We are all (certainly) entitled to one of those.
Until training camp,
jjh
